Pretty nice... Runs smoothly, and I didn't notice any problems with the collision detection.

You might want to add a "brake" or sorts that is applied when you press the down arrow, to keep you from going out of control.

That's half the fun

Yep, I shot up plenty of rectangles with my little triangle.

It doesn't appear that the "asteroids" are really following any sort of approximation of physics, but that might be something you did on purpose.

Didn't mind the lack of retro thrusters. Apparently these ships are bought a "Hal's Bargain Triangle Ships R Us".

So how about some sounds?

Also, I can get through the first several levels pretty easily. How about letting me start at level 5 or level 10?

Pressing fire to start isn't the best plan. You can too easily die and suddenly find yourself playing a new games. F2 is the standard "start a new game" key, and "Ctrl" is the standard "shoot" key, but spacebar is fine.

And how about a top ten list?

And a nifty "hyperspace" key, like the original asteroids?

Quick Fixes:
CTRL - fires
Spacebar - Warps to a random location (no safety assurance)
The 1,2,3 keys increase your current level by that amount. Press 0 for some fun.
F2 or 'C' - Continues game after death, starts game.
'R' - Resets level and score. Keeps high score.

The keying was a real quick hack. I'll probably remove 'R', reserving F2 for only resetting and a new game. Enter will be probably be used for continuing. Keyed level switching is only temporary until i can find the time to put in a simple menu.

Warping was added. I also added a cheap highlighting effect to bring more attention to the place the ship warps too (kinda gets lost with all the grey).

Sounds will probably never be added. I never included them for the same reason that I don't use textures.. I wanted a quick, lean, fun game that would take up mere kilobytes of space. A High score table, level select, and graphics settings are the kind of things that I always wanted to add, but never got around to. Luckily I actually found a copy of my source code (had been lost since i programmed it). Hopefully my school schedule will be loose enough for me to devote some (or all ) of my time to programming. A menuing system should be trivial.. and a config file created by the asteroids game would be excuseable.

Thanks for playing and for the suggestions.

EDIT:

Oh, and the all important questions:

Were you entertained?
Do you think you'd play it continuously (more than just the first time)?

Thanks

Another Update post.

First of all, I remapped the wacky key mappings. F2 Starts a new game (or resets the current game). Enter is used to continue once you die. Ctrl fires and Space does hyperspace.

The other nifty thing I added is an escape confirmation. This also serves to give the player the ability to pause the game.

Nice game, maybe you could add lives or something cause when I started playing I was expecting to do as best as possible and once I was dead come in highscores ^^. would be great id you could add those 2 things

You're right.. the infinite lives was a quick hack by me. I'll probably stick in three lives and then reset the game when they're up.

Sometims, after your die, is still possible to shoot one more time.
Just press CTRL. =P

Only thing I can add is: Could you add on the current speed to the speed of the shots?
It feels a little odd when you fire @ angles & expect the shots to move relative to your own movement but instead they appear to be being fired backwards

Nice little game. The score and best score were a little cut off by the top of the screen... I lasted almost 20 secs in the 'crazy 0-mode' ;)

I once played an asteroids clone for the Mac, it was a real nice looking game, but the one addictive feature I found was that destroying random asteroids some 'credits' were released, which you could pick up and use to purchase items (rapid fire, faster engines, shields etc.) during each level... something to think about anyway.

cheers,
possom
