I've been working on this project for the last five years. I'm the only full time programmer on it, plus one full-time artist, plus a couple part-timers. The engine was written from stratch. The entire project is about 300k lines of C++.

Here's some technical info about the game:

Great job I think these 5 years haven't been lost :). The game is really great and interesting. There are still some things I wan't to point to.

1. I encountered a strange problem when quiting from the game and moving back to menu. The buttons couldn't be pressed, alt+tab also didn't work , so with the ctrl+alt+del .The only way to solve it was to by pressing standby button .

2. Could you make a map size not fixed by a number of opponents on it. The problem is that I couldn't get as much upgrades as I could when playing 2v2

3. I think that there are some problems with balance ? This bug spawner is a really big advantage. Also I didn't see any defence structures for mutants. Could there be an options for turning of the resourse sharing :)

Overall the game is great, and I enjoyed playing it :)

The screen shots look great! I Can't wait to try it!

Very Cool! It's hard to believe this was written by one person.

One thing I will mention, is the controls seemed to be a little bit sticky compared to a game like Warcraft 3. I'm not sure if that's at all helpful, but my mouse seemed to have trouble moving the camera around.

None the less, the game is exceptional. Especially considering it had only one programmer. What kind of budget did you have for this?

User Rating: 1209   |  Rate This User    Send Private MessageView ProfileReport this Post to a Moderator

I didn't really do all the coding myself. A friend of mine coded the graphics engine, working part time--about two years @ 20 hrs a week. Now he works at a 'real' game company.

Yes, the game is a little rough around the edges, when compared to big budget commerical games. I'm trying to polish it as much as possible. The game balance will be improved too. Yes, roaches are a bit too popular at the moment.

If you have "sticky" issues, perhaps turning down some graphics options will help, for example lowering screen resolution.

It's hard to say what the budget was. This was developed in a basement. The budget was the cost of rent, food, etc. A few thousand dollars were spent on contract artwork. Another few thousand on hardware, etc.

Thanks for the feedback!

Great work. I think the game seems very polished right now. I think the fact that it stands up to big budget games speaks greatly to the effort you put into it.

Very cool game. The whole post-apocalyptic/trash lying about the place/odd humour was really enjoyable. Stylish and pro.

This game looks awesome. I think you have a potential commercial game here. Try to get it published.

I haven't tried it yet, but I will. From the looks of it, it's a possible commercial game where you can earn a bit of money. Perhaps Soldat style, let players register their copy for some additional eye-candy or customizations. This way you could perhaps organize competitions between registered users, run a lobby server, etc.

Thanks for the kind comments! I'm really pleased by how well people are receiving the game.

I actually tried to get a publisher a couple years ago, and I had no takers. The has come a along way since then, so maybe they'd be more interested this time around. It's a lot of work trying to court a publisher. I think I'll let them come to me this time :) In the meantime I'll start selling the game from the website, and who knows, maybe I won't need a publisher?

Downloading now (thank Coder for the prompt). The screenshots look very impressive.

Just had a go of it then (thank evolutional for the prompt), and damn that is an amazing peice of work. Good on ya man! .

I really like the Soldat way of selling the game that Toolmaker mentioned.

Really neat-looking. A port to the "alternative" platforms would be really great, and I could see making a fair bit of money with Soldat-style packs like Toolmaker said.

Great work! Hard to believe it was done by 1.5 guys

Awesome game man! I played it for an hour and a half, loved it. Would have played longer if I didn't have some work to do. My victory image:

It was really great!!! Better than Age of Empires' random maps! Well done!

Did you get my bug report about getting messages saying 'Failed to load 'balh.bmp' (tried to load as .jpg)' ? My brother got those too so it's not just my computer.

Also, it would be nice to be able to zoom out a bit more, and be able to select and deselect units by holding down the Ctrl key then clicking/dragging the rectangle.

As to the AI, when playing with an ally (single player) against two enemies - once we'd defeated one enemy, the ally's peacekeepers and bikes were left blocking the way for my trucks because I wanted to scavenge the trash. I saw my one of my trucks going back and forth, as trying to break through but nothing happened. They did go away when my ally started attacking the remaining enemy. The AI level was Normal in case that helps.

It's too addictive as well! I'm trying to make a game of my own here!

Keep up the good work!! (being able to save the game would be really good too , oo and as a low-priority thing, maybe you could save the terrain textures to the user's disk so it's not generated every load)
Aww - at least we developers can appreciate all the work put into it like the cool pathfinding, culling, clever AI etc

EDIT: and of course the modelling and artwork was really fantastic, and the user interface...wow!
It'd be cool if you could have an option for bigger maps :), PS: why the population limit - 283 seems a little arbitrary! I never reached it but I really hated the limit of 200 in Age of Empires II!

Maybe you're thinking that's all a bit over the top but in about year I've only tested my game (crummy by comparison ), EpochStar (great game too but 'fraid games like Homeworld aren't my taste) and Trash!!

Well done!!!!!

Absolutely incredible, I loved it!

It looks great, will try it tonight. As an RTS developing person myself I'm interested to see what else is out there - do you mind if I send you a link to the current state of my project?

How did you afford to make this - are you a student or what? You might want to PM Obscure to ask his advice about publishers or post in the Business forum. If you have a large number of players online that immediately shows the game has value to a publisher - how many users are there?

Great Game. You may not be the person to ask, but i have a problem with a game i'm trying to make called Tonka with the Game Maker engine. I have two enemys. They and their bullets are names as follows:

Enemy
Bullet
Super Enemy
Super Bullet

In v0.5 with just the Enemy the health system for the player was working just fine, but with the Super Enemy in v1.0 the health system dosen't work AT ALL. Could it be that Game Maker has too much to do?

Random Suggestions:

1. Give the AI more intellegence. Right now they just zoom around building and attacking evreything.

2. Make a "sandbox" mode where you just build and place enimeis and fight them.

3. Try and build higher detail modles.

4. Make the units move just a little faster on the grass. I feel the speed jump from grass to road is a little high.

Good game otherwise. Keep up the good work!
