Normal generation for terrain Hi everybody! I'm playing around with OpenGL and .NET and I've run into some difficulties (being a DirectX kind of guy). Basically what I want to do is render a heightmapped terrain. I generate the terrain as follows: for (int y = 0; y < pat...

So, how does GTA IV do it? Hi! I just played GTA IV on a friend's XBox 360 and I must say that it's great fun (I think I'll get myself a copy of the PC version for xmas). When I was playing the game, I realized that the lighting is absolutely gorgeous (especially th...

Why do these games look so darn pretty I'm posting this here because I think it's both an art- and a tech question and I wasn't sure what other forum would be more suitable. I have written a new engine and unlike my previous engine, it's doing 100% realtime lighting (phong + SSAO + PSS...

Feedback wanted + tips for a complete novice Hi everybody! I'm a programmer at heart so I'm not exactly sure what I'm doing in here, but here goes ;-) So for as long as I can think, I've had these melodies in my head. But I could never do anything with them. I don't play an instrument, I do...

EXE compiled on Vista won't run on XP (Visual Studio 2005/Native C++) [SOLVED] Hi! My home PC runs Vista (32 bit business) and so does my notebook (32 bit home premium). When I compile a C++ Project with Visual Studio 2005 SP 1 on Vista, the EXE it produces will run fine on Vista, but it won't start up on XP (Br...

Stencil buffer and full screen quads Ah, so many questions ;-) I'm trying to use the stencil buffer to "mask out" pixels when rendering a full screen quad, but it doesn't seem to work. First, I fill the stencil buffer like this: m_renderDevice->SetState(STATE_ZENABLE, 1);...

Render targets not working (when their size is different from the backbuffer's) Hi! The title says it all: When I'm rendering to a render target in DirectX 9 that has a width and height that is different from that of the back buffer (let's say 1/4 the size), it renders nothing. Actually, it doesn't render nothing, it renders th...

What happened to the texture filtering option? In the past, most games allowed you to choose between bilinear, trilinear and anisotropic texture filtering. In most modern games however, that option is gone. I'm wondering what the motives behind that are and how they're dealing with texture filt...

Picking with a "weird" coordinate system I'm trying to implement picking using the method described in the DXSDK sample, and I'm running into some problems. I use the 3ds max coordinate system (right handed with z-up) which may be one of the reasons why it's not working. But nothing...

Template magic required Hi! I'm battling with the C++ type system, and it looks like I'm losing. So I have the following struct: template <typename T, typename U> struct Accessor { void (T::*setter)(const U value); U (T::*getter)() const; }; ...

So, how does GTA IV do it? Thanks! I half expected you couldn't reveal any details... I don't really know what to make of "(the) PostFX work (that) was covered on GDC"... I'm assuming GDC is the Game Developers Conference, but I can't find anything from 2008. I tried a...

So, how does GTA IV do it? Thanks for the answers! The shadows definitely play an important role in the realism of the game (although I wish they had blurred them a little like they did in Crysis). What I'm wondering is how they did the ambient lighting. I think that's...

Garbage Collection Issue Be careful with recycling objects in Java! Java has a generational garbage collector and there's a different cost associated with collecting each generation. Short-lived objects are very cheap to collect and long-lived objects are collected so inf...

Fallout3, Farcry2 renderers I've only played FC2 so I can't comment about Fallout 3, but here are my 2 cents: Far Cry 2 looks worse than Crysis for what I believe to be the following reasons: 1) No ambient occlusion Since pretty much everything in FC 2 is destruc...

Browser MMO - Can MySQL + PHP support interaction between offline players? Having the presentation scripts trigger the simulation scripts is a bad idea imho, because running the simulation logic, even for just a handful of events, can take up enough time to create a noticeable lag in the front-end. It's also much cleaner co...
