About:
Magma Duel is a 2-player game whereas your objective is to destroy the opposing player, whether by knocking him into the boiling magma below, or by making use of the 9 nifty powerups available randomly floating around the level. Each round the level is generated by the computer based on modifiable (see Options) values. A new feel each time!

The powerups are done nicely, although I wasn't sure of the use of some of them. The dynamite seems to just blow you off the screen when you touch it, which is basically the same as the instant death powerup. Also the "invincibility" one (I think) doesn't protect against the instant death powerup; dunno if it was intentional or not :)
Some ideas to expand the game:
-Add a single player mode that has you going against increasingly harder AI opponents
-Collecting the same powerup consecutively "intensifies" the powerup
-A win/loss counter would be nice

I really appreciate your continual feedback. :)

Dynamite destroys any platforms it touches. It's collisionbox ignores the players.

There's no invincibility powerup, so I don't know what to tell you, hehe. ;)
(The Options menu lists all powerup types)

All good ideas. I'll paste 'em into my 'ToDo for Update' list and give 'em a go when I'm able to. :) Thanks again!

Posted - 10/1/2005 8:16:53 PM | Some corrections: it was actually the land mine powerup which blew you off the screen when used, not the dynamite. Maybe there is some way to use it I don't know about.
For the invinciblilty thing I mentioned earler, I meant the electricity powerup- I just assumed it was invinciblilty since when you touch another player with it, you send him flying, kinda like in Super Smash Bros. :)

Ah, yes. Hit the button to place the mine (it puts it in front of you), and then DON'T walk into it. Head in the other direction, and coax your enemy into walking into it. :)

It might be neat to use powerups while going up and down the ladders.
If you had a single player mode, you could have a power bar rather than a single hit and your dead.

Posted - 11/27/2005 7:47:12 AM | hehe, I made a marshmallow duel clone bout 2 years ago in Java, it was legend, had a tag mode and 3 player support and everything. (3 player tag.. such good memories...)
Can't wait to check your version out...

Posted - 11/27/2005 9:08:59 AM | Hehe, i cant believe we acutally used the exact same sound for the jumping boots! lol.
Anyway, i like your version, nice effects etc, the collision system just seems a bit clumsy at times, hard to explain. I liked the glove idea, too bad i couldn't get the 'play online' thing to work.
If you wanna check out my attempt, there's an old version at stickduel.tripod.com. Download the source, there's a batch file that should run it. It's very picky about where it runs though.

Posted - 11/28/2005 11:38:02 PM | Hey! I find it (almost comedically) coincidental that you're commenting on Magma Duel, because I drew a fair amount of inspiration from your Stick Duel game, too! Me and my friend (Draffurd; also the game's artist) spent many hours playing it. You did a wonderful job on your game, and I can unhesitantly say that without your Stick Duel, I doubt Magma Duel would have happened. Great to meet ya! ;)

If you want the 3 player version (it's a terrible hack, but unbelievably fun :), give me your email addy and I'll send it.
